Dr. Michael White is a renowned New Orleans-based clarinetist, bandleader, composer, and educator. He is considered one of the leading authorities on traditional New Orleans jazz. Despite growing up in New Orleans and having a family history in jazz, White didn’t start playing jazz until his late teens. He was inspired by the music he heard at Jazz Fest and began playing professionally in the 1970s. Throughout his career, White has performed with numerous bands and musicians, including the Original Liberty Jazz Band, the Young Tuxedo Brass Band, and the Danny Barker-founded Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band. He has also collaborated with renowned musicians like Wynton Marsalis and Eric Clapton. White has released numerous albums and has received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to traditional New Orleans jazz. In addition to his musical career, White has taught at Xavier University and has been involved in various educational initiatives related to New Orleans music.
